【Summary】
Children’s socialization into becoming competent members of institutions—such as preschools and classrooms–and, by extension, the broader society in which they are embedded, takes place through various forms of participation in culturally organized activities (Goodwin & Goodwin, 2004; Ochs, Solomon & Sterponi, 2005). In this pair of presentations, we focus on activity transitions—that is, the interstitial or “in-between” moments that occur between two primary activities or events. We examine the multimodal resources (e.g., talk, gaze, objects) and practices that participants—both teachers and children—draw on to accomplish social actions and display stances. Our analyses highlight how these transitional moments serve as sites of socialization, understood as both a reproductive and transformative process. The data are drawn from video recordings of naturally occurring interaction in a Japanese preschool and an international school.
