Japan and Latin America share more than a century of common history connected by migration, diplomacy, economic exchanges, and rich intercultural dialogues. The regions also have comparable histories of nation building, development, and political change through uneven and contradictory engagements with Western modernity. However, Japanese Studies remains peripheral to academia in Latin America due to the persistent Eurocentric orientation of higher education, chronic underfunding, and the lack of appropriate institutional infrastructure. Consequently, international collaboration remains limited, including academic exchanges between Portuguese and Spanish-speaking Japan scholars. At the same time, while there is a rich tradition of transpacific studies and collaborations in Japan-based Japanese Studies, Latin America-focused research and collaboration remains scarce and episodic.
Within this context, this project seeks to establish an international and multidisciplinary network for research and educational collaboration in Japanese Studies between scholars based in Japan and Latin America. It seeks to connect junior, mid-career, and established scholars through international symposia, graduate-student workshops, and joint research to strengthen and diversify the field in the two regions. By building a collaborative network among scholars of history, linguistics, literature, migration studies, and environmental studies, this project will contribute to internationalizing the emerging field of Japanese Studies in Latin America while opening new research opportunities and partnerships for scholars and institutions in Japan. Importantly, by including scholars from Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina, this project will foster intra-regional exchanges between scholars based in different Latin American countries, thus providing a rare opportunity for sustained dialogue and collaboration between Spanish and Portuguese speaking scholars.
In addition, this project seeks to define innovative research topics, methodologies, and epistemological perspectives by delving into the shared histories and cultural dialogues between Japan and Latin America. Project members will contribute to expanding and reframing Japanese Studies within broader global, transpacific, and intercultural contexts. Looking back at the shared histories and connections between Japan and Latin America, this project will promote an intellectual dialogue to open new avenues for innovation in Global Japanese Studies.
